Shadow Road Exploratory Sketches for Love Death + Robots - ‘For He Can Creep’

A super tricky task where we needed to explore what Shadow Road, a portal that bends time and space, would look like for Jeoffry to get past the Devil to save the poet.

I initially proposed a variety of designs that reflected the gothic world with broken, warped and floating architectural elements. These environments were dark, with glowing arches highlighting the ‘Portals’ back to the real world. Each design was to defy logic and feel dreamlike. Lots of reference discussed with the team was to 2001 A Space Odyssey and Piranesi’s ‘Stairways to nowhere’

Some other veriosns explored included a surrealist Ancient Egyptian version of Shadow Road that was promoted from the backstory of the cats defeating the Rat of Egypt. The aim here was to create an environment that was contrasting from the gothic architecture of the real world.
